Continuous Infinitive

Continuos Infinitive :   The continuous infinitive refers to the same time as that of the preceding verb and expresses an action in progress or happening over a period of time:

1.  After the auxiliary verbs : will/shall/may/might/can/could/must/would/should, continuous infinitive (be + present participle) is used. e.g.

  • (a)  They' II be playing now.
  • (b)  He might/may be watching TV.
  • (c)  He can't/couldn't be playing.  Reason : The field is occupied by the election team .
  • (d)  He can't/couldn't be watching TV.   Reason :  (Because the cable operators are on strike.
  • 2.  After verbs; appear, happen, pretend, seem continuous Infinitive (to be + present participle) is used. e.g.

  • (a)  I happened to be looking towards the road when their car stopped.
  • (b)  She seems to be following us.
  • Note : -Continuous infinitive can also be used after the verbs agree, arrange, decide, determine, hope, manage, plan. e.g.

  • I hope to be earning my livings in a year's time.
  • I determined to be waiting at the door.
  • 3.  After the verbs; believe, consider, suppose, think,, etc, continuous infinitive is used in passive structure. e.g.

  • (a)  She is believed to be living in France.
  • (b)  He is considered to be supporting the liberals.
